Dubfire Announces ADE Party and Panel Appearance

Header

SCI+TEC Digital Audio is set to host its first ever Amsterdam Dance Event showcase on October 21st 2010. The SCI+TEC party, which will take place at the new AIR nightclub, promises to be one of the standout events of the annual ADE conference, as label founder Dubfire will play a special extended set starting at midnight.

What’s more, pioneering UK electronic outfit Global Communication, aka Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard, will use the event to reunite for the first time since their last collaboration almost 15 years ago. The pair chose SCI+TEC’s ADE event to be their launch pad for the second chapter of Global Communication after Dubfire expressed to the duo that he was a huge fan of their work.

"It is with great respect and pleasure that I am able to host this event during one of the year's most important electronic music conferences. Not only have we been friends and mutual fans for many years, but Mark and Tom's 76:14 album is one of the greatest pieces of music ever recorded and very close to my heart. I'm thrilled to be able to witness a reunited Global Communication. In addition, I will also be joined by a very special guest and techno icon whose identity cannot be revealed. I eagerly look forward to our night together in October,” said Dubfire.

Global Communication will play an ambient set in Air’s mainroom before taking over the second room for an all-night DJ set with the kind of eclectic, fully warped electronic music that only Tom Middleton and Mark Pritchard can provide. Full Global Communication shows will return in 2011. Middleton and Pritchard said, "Our friend Ali has always been a long term fan and supporter of our work (he notably remixed our seminal house anthem 'The Way' with Sharam as Deep Dish back in the day), so we're delighted and honoured to have been invited to re-unite and perform again as Global Communication after well over a decade.

“It will be a great opportunity to celebrate and showcase the classic pioneering sounds of GC and to share our current tastes in music. Having honed our DJing and selecting skills over 20 years it should be an extraordinary and surprising sonic journey for everyone, including ourselves, as we've not performed together for many years.

“We can tell you this: we will span many genres and eras, and explore our inspirations from early 90's techno, house, ambient, and electronica right up to the cutting edge of modern production. So we are very much looking forward to seeing old fans and meeting new ones at this auspicious ADE event.”

It’s rumored that the SCI+TEC extravaganza will also feature a very special guest making an unannounced appearance. Los Angeles’ Mode Studios and Amsterdam’s Reach Visuals have been drafted in to create the visual experience, which Dubfire helped direct. In the afternoon before the SCI+TEC showcase party, Dubfire will also take part in the ‘Disintegrating Genres’ panel at ADE's main venue.

Tech Talk with Steve Duda

Header

>Tech Talk sheds light on the ever-evolving technological side of DJing and producing. Early adopters, look here as our artists show off their latest gadgets and obsessions. Everyone else - just try to keep up! This month, recent addition to the Bullitt roster and tech guru Steve Duda invites the Bullittin behind the curtain.

What piece of technology do you find yourself using most during tours, and why? (This could be an piece of technology: cell phone, e-reader, wireless charger, etc)

I would have to say that it is my laptop; it’s the brain of my sets. It makes all the sounds while I’m performing. Not only that, but it’s one of my main methods of communication – I use it to go on Skype, check emails, post on forums, etc. I also like to use it on flights to watch movies or just listen to music and relax.

What is your favorite website to visit when surfing the Internet, and why?

I don’t think I could just pick one. I spend a lot of time on blogs, but one of my favorites is createdigitalmusic.com. It always has new and interesting stuff that keeps me informed of new products that are being released and new concepts in music. I like matrixsynth.blogspot.com: it’s a blog dedicated to analog synths. I don’t indulge in buying them much, but I do like seeing what’s new with them. I also check out monome forums on a regular basis; there are always smart people on those forums that talk about tech- and music- related news. In a way, it has become a news aggregator for me since people on there also bring up topics other than music. KVRaudio.com is also another site I like since its full of plug-in junkies that are always showing off what they know.

What is your favorite piece of gear, and what type of sound does it bring to your productions?

My favorite piece of gear is definitely my desktop PC, since it generates most of the sounds in my productions. I feel that there are always new things to explore. There is always something new to explore with PCs since there is a ton of freeware out there that people create for doctoral dissertations, during their free time, or as part of other projects that is available for the public to use for free. I like my PC over other gear because I’m not a gear snob; I’m much more interested in software and how far we can take it. Apart from my PC, I really like my Genelec 8250 speakers. They are an industry standard for mixing engineers and have a sweet sound to them. They have a great low end response that lets me hear every sound in a track. I had Joel (Deadmau5) at my studio a while back and he played a track he was working on. As we listened, he paused for a second and realized that there was a sound in the loop that he had not heard before. He now uses them in his studio, too.

What got you to start designing software?

It was something of an accident. Artists wanted me to work on their demos, so I would spend a ton of time in the studio recording drummers. So much hard disc space was being taken up that I decided that I would find a way to just take the better pieces of the drummers’ work and use those. I did this over and over, until I had just the right sounds I wanted. I kept at it, and I mixed the sounds together until I made something that blew my clients’ minds. I then thought that if I really knew how to program, I could make some real money and entertain my whimsical ideas. So I took some time and learned how to program and released my first commercial project, Lucifer. It was a stutter and scratch program: I would describe it as beat repeat program on steroids. I then found that a bunch of DJ’s were using it and thought that if they could produce music with products like the ones that I’m using, then I can make music. This is what actually led me to production.

Umek Lights Up Beatport

Slovenian techno giant Umek continues to impress the electronic music world with top-notch original productions. Nearly a dozen of his tracks have broken the overall Beatport Top 100 this calendar year, and his most recent release shows the world that he has no intention of stopping: last week’s “We Are Not Done Yet” [303Lovers] -- a collaboration with Beltek with remixes by Marshall, Manuel De La Mare & Alex Kenji -- has already found success on international charts. In addition, “OMGWTF” (Original Mix) [1605], alongside his and Jay Lumen’s remix of “Clouds Across the Moon” by Rah Band [Great Stuff], continue to occupy Beatport’s Overall Top 10 today, with the former track crowned #1 overall for nearly two weeks last month.
