The Unstoppable Rise of Davide Squillace

Header

Davide

The star of Davide Squillace continues to rise thanks to a new Resident Advisor interview and a debut appearance on Berlin’s influential Get Physical imprint. Last year was a big one for the Barcelona-based DJ and producer. His huge ‘Desolat X008’ EP, which included the club smash ‘Cubism’, was one of Squillace’s biggest hits to date, and the growth of his Hideout label and brand that he co-runs with fellow Bullitt artist Luca Bacchetti has been rather impressive. His lengthy interview on RA, one of electronic music’s most visited websites, and his remix of Audiofly’s ‘Fela’ on Get Physical, are the perfect start to 2011.

Keep an eye on Davide’s MySpace for upcoming gigs.

Danny Howells has focused on building up his imprint with a steady stream of solo productions since early 2009, making the past two years his most prolific time ever in the studio. Tech Talk With Tom Novy

Header

Tom Novy

German DJ Tom Novy is an inexhaustible producer. He also loves gadgets and new studio toys. We sat down with him to chat about his favorite DJ gear and studio technology.

Have you used the new Pioneer CDJ-2000s yet?

Yep, I think they’re great. They have lots of new features, like an option to play from a USB stick. It’s not sexy, but it makes travelling so much easier. The Rekordbox software allows you to set cue points and loops before a set, and you can quantize everything. This means that even my wife could set a loop with her left hand, and it will run forever! You don’t have to do it the manual way like you did with the 1000s.  It makes mixing much easier, and I think that’s the most important difference.

Do you use any analogue gear in the studio?

From time to time, yes. I have some old synths that I use occasionally, but most of the time it’s all software and plugins.

What new DJ gear do you have in your setup? What’s the oldest bit of kit you’ve got?

Pioneer’s new stuff is probably the recent gear that I love the most, and my oldest bit of kit is my Sennheiser headphones. I used to use them throughout the 90s, and then I switched to a couple of other brands, but now I’m back in love with them.  They sound really good and are indestructible.

You’ve got a MySpace, Facebook, and Twitter account. Do you think a dedicated artist website is necessary these days?

I’m working on my new site at the moment and I hope it will be done pretty soon. It’s important to have one because it helps you to stand out a bit more as an artist, and looks more professional. It should be something like your business card on the web, and it should connect to your whole network. Facebook, MySpace, YouTube and other social media portals are important to me as well, but I don’t want to rely solely on them.
