Bullitt Spotlight: Dubfire

Header
Dubfire

This month's Bullitt Spotlight brings a Q&A with Dubfire on the day of his latest SCI+TEC release, Rabid. We reflect on his whirlwind summer tour, the insipiration behind the new track, and what the future has in store.

You’ve just come off a hectic tour schedule. What were the highlights of the last few months?
"I'd have to say that the Exit Festival back-to-back set with Richie Hawtin was a high point in my career. Although it was technically challenging and Rich and I had never played together in that context before, we were both really pleased with the results and hope to do it again in the near future. I also must admit that the Cocoon Ibiza dates and after-parties were some of my best ever this summer."

Rabid is your first SCI+TEC release in quite some time. Was this a track long in the making or the product of an inspired studio session?
"It was an idea that I'd had for many years, especially with the vocal refrain, and It was one of those things that kind of became fully realized over the course of a few studio sessions, in between my busy travel schedule. I had the chance to really road test it for many months before putting it to bed and I'm quite happy with the result as well as the crowd response. I hope the fans will embrace it."

You credit BT for vocal FX on Rabid. How did you two work together on this particular track?
"Well Brian and I are still very close friends and he'd been telling me about a stutter effect plug-in he's been working on for awhile that's still in it's early test stages. In my head, I'd been imagining how the vocal should be cut up and manipulated so I decided to have him give it a go. When Brian returned the vocal stem with all of these bizarre, scary and unique FX, it became a battle of how much to leave out. Needless to say, I'm very happy with the end results."

Rabid Preview Video

The promotional video for Rabid features visuals from your shows. Who is behind these?
"Human Studio, from Sheffield (UK), are the geniuses behind this video and the entire Dubfire and SCI+TEC visual world. They've always managed to re-interpret the music of the label into colors and images which reflect my vibe."

Is there a Rabid remix coming out in the future?
"Well I simply HAD to ask Matt Edwards [Radio Slave] to do a mix which he's currently working on. I've also been a hug fan of what Tony Scott [Edit Select] has been doing as well so am really excited about hearing his interpretation."

Davide Squillace: Beyond Beats

Squillace Founds Beyond Beats Fashion Line

Siena-born/Barcelona-based Davide Squillace has been setting the tone for cutting edge dance music for nearly twenty years. He began promoting events at a young age and his impact as a DJ, producer and record label owner has been felt the world over. Now, the renaissance man is wearing a new hat—fashion designer. Teaming up with German-Italian designer Lusch, Davide unveils Beyond Beats—a line of clothing with style and functionality inspired by Davide’s own extensive touring life.

A press release issued for the line states that “the Beyond Beats clothing range features simple designs in neutral tones. Basic cuts enhanced by unique details and the occasional flash of color create a range that is easy to wear and individual.”

One of the first pieces to come out of this collaboration is a handmade black scarf, a flourish that will wear easily on style-inclined men and women, outfitted with a leather loop that adds substantial functionality. The elegant style and wear-ability of this line were designed with the clubber in mind.

Of Beyond Beats, Davide says, “We’re not really interested in developing something into a huge brand with a huge range. We wanted to create something that is wearable, affordable yet cutting edge and personal—a few choice garments, what more do you need?”

Davide and Lusch will be debuting more items in the months to come. Keep a close eye on the line as these items will only be available in limited quantities.

South American Swing: Delete

Header
Delete aka Sergio Munoz

The proliferation of Latin-infused house this year has had dancefloors worldwide salsa-ing and samba-ing to bombas courtesy of artists such as Michel Cleis, Matias Aguayo and Reboot. Adding a Latin vocal or indigenous instrument to an otherwise Teutonic track has a reliably uproarious and infectious effect, but a new school of South American artists is leading the way in a different direction. Continuing in the framework pioneered by Ricardo Villalobos, Luciano, Dandy Jack, they are churning out authentically Latin electronic music at a feverish clip. Sergio Muñoz, who goes by the artist name Delete, is one such pioneer leading the way back to genuine, South American groove.

Born and based in Caracas, Venezuela, a city notoriously inhospitable to touring DJ talent, Sergio has been a student of all things funky from a very young age. “I started because all my life my family has been playing soul, disco, salsa and jazz around the house so I grew up hearing the groovy stuff.” The ubiquity of Latin sounds in Sergio’s life became the lifeblood of his style when he began DJing and producing. His tracks don’t need a mambo chorus or blaring horn section to imbue the infectious and sexy vibes that define Latin music, nor does he strive for this quality—it flows from him naturally. Sergio’s newest SCI+TEC release, Minutos with Anton Pieete, swings and swaggers and raises the temperature on the historically cold climate of European minimal house.

The Bullitt wünderkind is embarking on European, North American, and South American tours in support of this and many other recent releases. Catch the breeze of his South American sound—you won’t have to learn any steps to enjoy it.
